Robots in Sabadell and an AI «employee»: what the headlines really say
Three Friday stories about AI with a body or with tasks. One line will travel further than the others, and it needs reading next to its standfirst.

The line most likely to be forwarded today is this one: artificial intelligence can now work as just another employee. It is the headline ABC gives to its story on Google's Gemini. It fits in a screenshot and sounds like mass layoffs. But Friday brought two other stories about machines with jobs to do, and together they say something more useful.
The most recent comes from Expansión. ABB Robotics and SoftBank will open a large robotics centre in Sabadell. The site will cover 15,000 square metres and open in 2028. According to the paper, it is part of the plan by the company led by Masayoshi Son to bring AI into the physical world, using technology from Arm and OpenAI.
What will be forwarded is «robots are coming to Catalonia». What the standfirst says is narrower: a centre, a size, a year and a plan. It does not say how many jobs, what will be made there, or how much money is behind it. Those details are not in the material we have, so we do not give them.
The second headline is the Gemini one. ABC's standfirst says AI developers want to move past the stage of conversational assistants and reach full autonomy for the technology. Note the verb: «want». The headline says «can now». Between the two verbs lies a gap that a screenshot erases. From here we cannot say which tasks Gemini performs or with what human oversight. Only the full piece can.
The third scales down. El Confidencial reports that a team of researchers has created PhoneBot, a kind of WALL-E made from that old phone that has sat in a drawer for years. No multinational, no plan, just a recycled handset. It will travel as «turn your old phone into a robot». The headline says the scientists have made it possible. It does not say it is a product, or that you can do it this weekend.
Three scales of one idea
A 15,000-square-metre centre, a program that wants to work on its own, and a phone on wheels. The sizes differ, but they point the same way: AI is leaving the chat window. Some of it will act in the physical world, and some will carry out tasks without being told each step. The three stories say so at different speeds. One sets a date, one states a wish, one shows a demo.
Un análisis más profundo de las implicaciones
What follows is the newsroom's opinion, not fact from the cited pieces. Start with work. Calling a program an «employee» is a handy metaphor, but it drags in questions a human employee already has answers to. If it gets something wrong, who answers for it? Who signs off on what it does? Legally, today those answers come from company contracts, not from the technology. Until they are clear, «autonomy» means more checking work for someone, not less.
Economically, the Sabadell item is the most concrete signal of the day. Big AI money has been flowing into chips and data centres. A robotics centre is something else: a bet that value will also sit where parts move. Our reading is that the business of the coming years will lie less in the model itself and more in whoever can put it into a factory, a warehouse or a workshop and make it reliable. Those who sell that integration, and the training to use it, will find demand. That is a hypothesis, not investment advice.
And one prediction, with its share of gamble. Physical AI will reach closed, repetitive settings before it reaches homes. Software agents will look less like a replacement and more like a fast intern: they will produce the first draft and a person will sign. PhoneBot hints at something less discussed: reusing cheap hardware may lower the cost of small robotics more than any grand plan. We will see whether society notices first in jobs, in prices or in liability when something fails.
Qué hacer antes de reenviar
- For the Gemini line, open the ABC piece and look for the specific tasks and who supervises them. If you cannot find them, do not forward «it already works like an employee».
- For Sabadell, forward only what is stated: 15,000 square metres, 2028, SoftBank, Arm and OpenAI. Do not add jobs or investment figures if Expansión does not give them.
- For PhoneBot, separate a researchers' demonstration from a product you can buy or build.
- When two headlines seem to tell the same story, check whether they use the same verb: «wants», «will open» and «has created» are not the same as «can now».
Questions
What are ABB Robotics and SoftBank opening in Sabadell?
According to Expansión, a large robotics centre of 15,000 square metres, due to open in 2028. It is part of the plan by the company led by Masayoshi Son to bring AI into the physical world with technology from Arm and OpenAI.
Does Gemini already work as an employee?
That is the headline in ABC. The standfirst says AI developers want to move beyond conversational assistants towards full autonomy. Read the whole piece to see which tasks it does and under what supervision.
What is PhoneBot?
According to El Confidencial, a WALL-E-like robot built by a team of researchers from an old phone. The standfirst does not say whether it can be built at home or bought.
